Prof. Toshio Ando, Leading Expert on High Speed Scanning AFM

Toshio Ando is Professor of Physics and Biophysics at the Nano Life Science Institute (WPI-NanoLSI) of Kanazawa University. He got PhD in Physics from Waseda University. After working at UC San Francisco as a postdoctoral fellow and then an Assistant Research Biophysicist from 1980 to 1986, he returned to Japan to establish Biophysics Laboratory at the Department of Physics, Kanazawa University. For more than two decades he has been developing high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) techniques to directly visualize protein molecules in dynamic action at high spatiotemporal resolution. For his achievement of this development and application of HS-AFM to dynamic biomolecular processes, he has been awarded a number of awards and prizes.
