This colloidal probe combines the well-known features of the proven Pyrex-Nitride AFM probes series such as high application versatility and compatibility with most commercial SPMs with a reproducible sphere radius instead of a sharp AFM tip.

Pyrex-Nitride AFM probes are designed for various imaging applications in contact or dynamic mode.

The so called "Colloidal Probe Technique", where single colloids are attached with polymer glue to AFM cantilevers for force measurements, offers possibilities for a better understanding of fundamental interactions in a variety of fields. Examples are adhesion phenomena, particle-surface interactions, mechanical properties, suspensions, hydrodynamics and boundary slip - to name just some out of an increasing number of applications.

The Pyrex-Nitride AFM probes have silicon nitride AFM cantilevers with very low force constants. The AFM probe series features a support chip that is made of Pyrex. The AFM cantilevers are stress compensated and have a 65 nm chromium / gold back side coating for high laser reflectivity.

The AFM probe offers unique features:

  • sphere material: polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)
  • excellent sphere diameter: A = 1.5 µm, B = 3.36 µm, C = 6.44 µm, D = 9.57 µm, or E = 14.59 µm (all +/- 5%)
(Due to different masses the resonance frequency can differ.)
    Please choose A, B, C, D, or E  by ordering!

Only one AFM cantilever with sphere, please choose long or short!

NB: Colloidal AFM probes based on PNP cantilevers have complex behavior that is strongly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity, often leading to cantilever bending and cantilever torsion. For this reason we strongly recommend using colloidal AFM probes based on qp-CONT or qp-SCONT cantilevers for all applications that require very soft cantilevers and/or operation in fluids. This product is manufactured to customer demand only. Therefore, we do not guarantee the integrity or functionality of PNP-based colloidal probes. Exchanges or returns are expressly excluded.

Gold Coating / Gold Reflex Coating

The gold coating consists of a 35 nm thick gold layer deposited on the front side of the AFM cantilevers.

The gold reflex coating deposited on the detector side of the AFM cantilevers enhances the reflectance of the laser beam. As the coating is almost stress-free the bending of the AFM cantilevers due to stress is less than 2 degrees.
